Outdoor Education Blog Post #1

During my brief 20 years on this planet I’ve had some very extensive experience in the wilderness as we call it in the U.S, which is where I’m from. In the great state of Vermont there is an abundance of hiking, swimming, and adventuring that one can partake in to connect with the natural world. Vermont also happens to be the state in which I attend University, here I’m a member of the UVM (University of Vermont) outing club where students collaborate into groups and schedule several hikes together. Camel’s Hump is one of my favorite trails with a height of 1,244 meters and quite the incredible view of Vermont’s natural beauty, especially during the summer time. So one of the reasons I took this course was due to my prior experience in the outdoors and my love for geography and geology. In traveling down here to Australia I wanted to make it a mission of mine to be able to see the beautiful landscapes that the country has to offer so taking this class was a must for me. As far as what I personally bring to the group, you can count on a positive attitude, knowledge of how to be safe (mentally & physically) while taking long hiking trips, and a willingness to learn more! I honestly have quite high expectations for this course, anything that brings me out of the city of Sydney and shows me what Australia has to offer is high in the rankings for me. Finally, the professor obviously has a very positive attitude towards this course, which is exciting to see someone who’s passionate about what they’re teaching so I believe that this course will overall make me more confident in exploring the Australian terrain.
